Conversation with Michael Kasberg that lead to a Facebook Post

Okay, so I was thinking about writing a post about the new Facebook email system and I finally did; here's the conversation that lead up to my actual writing of the post.

l10_chriss: is anyone doing a facebook email post?
Michael Kasberg: not that i know of, no.
l10_chriss: ok
l10_chriss: i think i'm going to and probably going to blast how stupid the idea is
Michael Kasberg: hahahaha
l10_chriss: like i need another email client thats a crappy recreation of google wave
l10_chriss: which had no real purpose
Michael Kasberg: did you read facebook's message about it "not being email"
Michael Kasberg: they are trying to take the "email" aspect out of it
l10_chriss: right then what is it?
Michael Kasberg: basically, a more advanced messaging system.
Michael Kasberg: more advanced than email, is the vibe i'm getting
Michael Kasberg: from what i can tell, email is one part of the equation. that, coupled with chat, messages, and texting.
l10_chriss: what's the draw for me to use it
Michael Kasberg: that's where you're right. there isn't a draw.
Michael Kasberg: it's just a cooler way to use facebook messages.
l10_chriss: that its "more advanced" who cares i like what i have again see google wave
Michael Kasberg: right - and who is going to do business on facebook
l10_chriss: i stopped being cool when I started cleaning poopie dipers once a day
Michael Kasberg: haha
Michael Kasberg: the system is awesome for friends/family. horrible for work
l10_chriss: very true
Michael Kasberg: i can see it being cool to be able to text, email, chat, and message your friends and have the convo always come back to the same place.
Michael Kasberg: one conversations stream although you use different devices
l10_chriss: do you really want your bank statement in facebook?
Michael Kasberg: exactly.
l10_chriss: that's a quote from zberg
Michael Kasberg: yeah, and the way they set it up, your bank statement and other important info, gets filtered into an "other" folder - like spam.
Michael Kasberg: because "friends and family come first"
Michael Kasberg: there are no attachments, no subject lines, no fodlers
Michael Kasberg: another good one: he said the subject line is pointless bc you don't need to organize messages that way. should be organized by person.
Michael Kasberg: had a stat that most subject lines on facebook were "yo" and "hey"
l10_chriss: yea facebook
Michael Kasberg: but that's facebook where it's not important
l10_chriss: because you have to include it in a facebook message
l10_chriss: in a facebook message i can see the entire conversation like an IM
l10_chriss: why do i need a subject for that, its not an email
Michael Kasberg: right. but if i'm sending a client an RFP or setting up a meeting, i want a subject that says "regarding meeting about project X"
l10_chriss: exactly
l10_chriss: i mean send me an email from facebook to gmail will look like this
l10_chriss: subject:
l10_chriss: from: Michael Kasberg
l10_chriss: thanks mike what do you need?
l10_chriss: now I can't screen my phone calls anymore
Michael Kasberg: haha, right.
l10_chriss: i actually have to answer
Michael Kasberg: it just leads to an unorganized mess because everything is organized by person rather than topic
Michael Kasberg: but again, i think it'd be cool to use with my girlfriend, my two roommates, and my parents.
l10_chriss: yea
Michael Kasberg: and that's about it.
l10_chriss: i could see both sides but to me seems like more cons than pros
l10_chriss: so again what's going to make me switch and tell 1000's of people my new, new, new email address what a beating
l10_chriss: everyone's done that and they don't switch often afterwards unless its forced by a career change
Michael Kasberg: yeah, that's the biggest problem i see. you have ALL your contacts in gmail or whatever. some of them probably aren't even on facebook
l10_chriss: yep
l10_chriss: they' have to join facebook probably
Michael Kasberg: i know you can message people that aren't on facebook, but again - they see no subject line. and when they send it back, you can't organize it any other way other than their name.
l10_chriss: ok so i just watched the video
l10_chriss: and this is totally about friends/family nothing else
Michael Kasberg: right
l10_chriss: i like the idea of all things in one timeline, which works great for friends family
l10_chriss: but there are other conversations... let me think about that
l10_chriss: i do communicate a lot with different people through all sorts of mediums
l10_chriss: having all in one local could be easir
l10_chriss: humm
Michael Kasberg: yes - if you're always talking about the same thing.
l10_chriss: and there's the problem
Michael Kasberg: if you need to reference something, it's so awesome to have 3 emails with all the info, archived.
Michael Kasberg: not scrolling up 10,000 times and looking around
l10_chriss: now you'll have to dig through 10,000 messages
l10_chriss: ha
l10_chriss: sucks
Michael Kasberg: right. friends - awesome. business - horrible.
l10_chriss: agreed
Michael Kasberg: google wave was better for businesses. at least you could share attachments
l10_chriss: yep, but again no-one used it and ton's of people use gmail
l10_chriss: they even had real time chat so you could see what i was typing as i typed
Michael Kasberg: yeah, which is rad. i actually liked google wave
l10_chriss: awesome capability because I can formulate answers like a real conversation instead of waiting 30 seconds for reply like we're doing now
l10_chriss: Michael Kasberg is typing...
Michael Kasberg: yeah. it was great. editing in real time is good.
l10_chriss: Chris Sloan is typing
Michael Kasberg: althought a little distracting at first
Michael Kasberg: haha
l10_chriss: you get the pong
l10_chriss: point
l10_chriss: alright going to start writing the post now
